"Ours is essentially a tragic age, so we refuse to take it tragically. The cataclysm has happened, we are among the ruins, we start to build up new little habitats, to have new little hopes. It is rather hard work: there is now no smooth road into the future: but we go round, or scramble over the obstacles. WE'VE GOT TO LIVE, NO MATTER HOW MANY SKIES HAVE FALLEN" D.H. Lawrence, Lady Chatterley's Lover
Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Canada'a home for Queer Culture, proudly presents the premiere of ART FAG, a sexy triptych of new work from choreographer & visual artist Darryl Hoskins.
Here the term "Art Fag" describes an uncompromising attitude, towards art and identity. Inspired by D.H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover, ARTFAG is a provocative trio of multi-disciplinary dance creations that speak potently about experience, individuality and character. Each part of the trilogy is distinct in its diversity and terrain. Choreographed and Directed by D.A. Hoskins, this collection of multi-disciplinary dance creations aims to engage the audience, as both dance and contemporary visual art. Accomplished dance artists Danielle Baskerville & Brendan Wyatt are joined by imaginative artists, working in a variety of media, including filmmaker Nico Stagias, spoken word artist Jill Battson, playwright Byron Fast, composer Gilles Goyette, soprano Deidre Fulton, and musician (trumpet) Shaun Brodie.
HARD CANDY
Dance artists Danielle Baskerville and Brendan Wyatt join spoken word poet/artist Jill Battson as a sugar-free Lynchian trio. Hard Candy premiered in May 2006 at Tangente in Montreal. The term 'hard candy' evokes a fountain of associations. The work fittingly confronts the dissolution of desire and the evolution of cynicism. Hard Candy is enjoyed in a dynamic theatrical landscape where the volatility of human interaction is explored through the history of experience.
I AM MARILYN
A solo for Brendan Wyatt. No wigs or white dresses involved. The departure point for I Am Marilyn is the collective perception of screen icon Marilyn Monroe. Although performed by Brendan Wyatt (and accompanied by a Russian text by Byron Fast) this conceptual work isn't about cross-gender or cross-dressing. I Am Marilyn explores how individuals relate and define themselves and how the human condition is affected by persona. Through the audio of spoken text, I Am Marilyn offers the story of an individual that is simultaneously personal and universal.
LADY - Images in a Melodramatic Setting
Danielle Baskerville leads a quartet exploring truth and illusion in a theatrical landscape. Lady destabilizes the homogenization of personal identity. Is conformity a consequence of our sexualized culture - a culture eager to reduce the individual to a type or caricature? These concerns are addressed in an arena of image play. The work unfolds as a stream of consciousness and offers a potent mix of imagery and symbolism within its constantly evolving landscape. The four players create a series of portraits that explore, and are empowered by, personal experience. With the intent to liberate a perspective of sexualized stereotypes, Lady ultimately aims to present an intimate and personal reality - the story of a lady, alone.
