What is Young Creators Unit?
The Young Creators Unit (YCU) provides a supportive and artistically rigorous space for four queer-identified artists (age 25 and under) to develop and perform their own original, 30-minute, solo performance piece. Under the creative mentorship of YCU Director Evalyn Parry, members of the YCU workshop their material through weekly Unit meetings, and present their final works at the annual Rhubarb Festival.
YCU runs OCTOBER to FEBRUARY
The YCU is dedicated to developing the work of promising, emerging queer creator/performers. We are interested in work that pushes the boundaries of theatrical creation, and in keeping with Buddies’ mandate, have a particular interest in work that reflects “queerness” either in terms of LGBT identity, and/or in terms of difference, being outside the mainstream, challenging in both content and form.
Application deadline for the 2010 / 11 YCU is Friday September 17th, 2010 at 5 pm. Applications must be RECEIVED (not postmarked) by this date at the theatre.
Interested applicants, please note: The YCU will meet on Monday afternoons from noon to 4 pm, starting on Monday October 11th. Final presentations will take place as part of the 2011 Rhubarb Festival, on February 19th and 20th, 26th and 27th. To participate, you must be available for all Unit meetings, as well as additional rehearsal time (TBA) in January and February.
